The most common platform of satellite is FTA-Free to Air, this is usually found by scanning various satellites for different programs. These programs can be on or off at any time on any given satellite. This is what makes it fun. Discovering a new program on a new satellite to watch absolutely free. There are 2 commonly used bands (frequency ranges). C-band and KU band. To receive C-band, more than likely you will need a large size dish around 2m in diameter or more. The second band, KU requires a smaller dish similar to what the pay TV operators use.
As always though the bigger the dish will always bring you a better service and more channels.
